| Uncovering Riches
Housed in the Maze of Indian Museums
|
| |
Strange
though it might seem for a country
which has such a plethora of them,
museums are an alien concept to
India. In fact, it was the British,
with their great love for preserving
and displaying things, who introduced
the notion of a museum to India.
The first museum to be established
was the Indian Museum in Kolkata,
which beside the wonderful medieval
Hindu sculptures, also has a great
collection of early Buddhist art.
Today
there are well over 500 different
kinds of museums in India and
though all of them have a special
charm to them, the ones in places
like Khajuraho and Sanchi, have
a really special feel to them
located as they are in places
which have been declared World
Heritage Sites.

| The Coromandel
Coast
|
|
The South
of India has a large number
of memorable museums. But
for a truly different experience
take a trip to Dakshina
Chitra which is set on the
Coromandel coast overlooking
the Bay of Bengal in the
state of Tamil Nadu, 21
kilometers south of Chennai.
This is a living, breathing,
cross-cultural museum of
architecture, life-styles,
crafts, performing arts,
even food and music of all
the states in the South
of the country.

The center
is on the road to the famous
7th century seaport town
of the Pallava kings, Mammalapuram,
a UNESCO world heritage
site.

If
you have the bent of mind, the
Rail Museum in New Delhi offers
a glimpse of some of the old beauties
that transported the princes and
the imperial masters, as well
as commoners like Mahatama Gandhi
around the vast and bustling countryside
in the days of yore. For the kids
accompanying you, there's a quaint
little rail carriage that swings
toddlers around. Then there are
specialised museums like the beautiful
Calico Museum of Textiles, aptly
located in Ahmedabad, the center
of textile manufacturing in India.
Interestingly,
the museums that house rare treasures
are often themselves outstanding
examples of architecture and building.
The Prince of Wales Museum in
Mumbai is as much worth visiting
as an example of colonial architecture
as it is for what it houses. Exhibits
at this well-preserved museum
span the history and culture of
India, from pre-proto history
artifacts to decorative arts and
Indian miniature painting.
